It's days like this when it's annoying being an instructor. Wind picked up
early today to solid 4.5 weather, and with the tide low was well up for
going out around 1pm for an hour on a wave board. But....had to give a
waterstart lesson instead. So, was standing around in the water faffing
around trying to get this (very nice) Italian lady to waterstart whilst
everyone else was out there ripping it up.
Was not bothered at the time, since expected the wind to stay for when I
was to go out later, and be easily strong enough for my 4.6. Wrong. When I
went out at 4pm (best time with the tide for the waves), the wind had
dropped off loads. Was mucho underpowered, and although I did get going on
a few runs I was constantly bearing away to keep on the plane. Result:
ended up a long way downwind after each run out and back, and hence needed
a couple of 10-15 minute wades through the water back to where I started
before I could get on again. Only spent about 15 minutes in the hour
actually sailing.
Finished off the session with a final 15 minute wade back to the beach, and
straight to the bar where my friends were relaxing happily with a beer
after having had good sessions earlier. If I wasn't an instructor I would
have been out there with them. Arse.
